My first real shot at painting without lineart, as some of you who've been following the livestream or my skype would know!
For my audition, this is Hyrak, a sentient and legendary mask. It is known in other tongues as the "Voracity's Visage", "Mage Eater", or "The Devourer". Hyrak's creator had a fondness for going overboard with quite a lot of things, such as drinking, drugs, and especially eating. Gluttony was his vice and with a light imprinting of the maker's soul as all sentient items have, Hyrak was made to help its creator taste the intangible of magic and emotion. Its creator died choking on food in celebration before Hyrak could properly be used and instead fed off the panic of its maker and the shock of everyone around it enough to make a body and escape.
Upon being worn, Hyrak shares its unique immunity to all things magical with the wearer, allowing them to consume magic. It also is able to help calm others by ripping emotions out of those nearby or suddenly afflicting others with its ravenous appetite for, well, most everything. Naturally, such power comes at costs, as the wearer would need to battle with the immense and overwhelming ego of the item, who fights for control over a body to ironically enjoy the delights of having a physical form that is lacks on its own. Furthermore, any consumed emotions will run their course within the eater as such things need to be properly digested.
Hyrak's personality is a rather odd one. It only goes one way or the next in alignment when a particularly powerful set of emotions moves it toward good or evil and it will always go a step further to gratuitously indulge itself in it. To Hyrak, feeding on feelings is far more delicious than magic, as useful as it may be.
So when he met Mirasis who is a glutton for a fight...
